“A sustainable world is not an impoverished world but one that is prosperous in different ways. The challenge for the twenty-first century is to create that world.” - Tim Jackson in 2008 State of the World.
Meeting #14 - Nov. 6, 2008

Sustainable Stockton Meeting Minutes

Thursday, November 6, 2008, at 7:00 pm, Stockton Municipal Building (meeting #14)

Attendees:  Sue Anderson; Cindy Davis; Donna Literski; Kim Becken; Haley Sankey; and Sharon Reichert.

Agenda Items:

Meeting Minutes.  Minutes of Meeting #13 were approved as written (Donna/Kim; all in favor).

Documentary Series Update.   The Future of Food, the 1st documentary in a series of 4 films sponsored by Sustainable Stockton and MREA will be shown on November 13, 2008, at 7 pm at MREA.

Sue and Mary will be providing the popcorn; movie goers can bring their own beverage.  A hand-out listing the documentaries, a sheet for interested parties to sign up for our e-mail list, an informational piece on Sustainable Stockton, and opening remarks by sponsors (MREA and Sustainable Stockton representatives) will be provided that evening to participants.

Website & Goods and Services Directory.  Haley Sankey will test the Sustainable Stockton website, as a new user, to see if the disclaimer is working properly and report back to the group.  Donna to send Lynn Dombrowski $50 for her work to provide final programming updates to our web site.

Jerry Piesik, Town of Stockton Supervisor and Stockton small business owner, has kindly offered to copy our Goods & Services Directory, and the Town of Stockton has graciously agreed to mail it out with the next Town newsletter in December or January.  Jerry Piesik should be noted as a sponsor for the Directory.  Also, the Town Board should be thanked for including it in their mailing.

Light Bulb/Education Materials Distribution.  Kim reported that 755 light bulbs were given out in the Town of Stockton on Election Day as our WEEB grant project.  86 of those people gave us their e-mail address to sign up for Sustainable Stockton’s e-mail list.  Another 119 were interested in the newsletter.  The extra CFL’s will be given back for a refund.  The light bulb distribution proved worthwhile in its education efforts since only 1/3 of the 755 people had never used a CFL before.  Kim will have more stats forthcoming, so we can get that information into the Town of Stockton Newsletter.  Sharon will draft a thank you to the Town Board and Clerk for allowing us to be in the polling location on Election Day.   Sue, Kim, and Sharon will get together to figure out how to handle the new e-mail sign-ups when the remainder of grant information is finalized.

Funding for Sustainable Stockton Projects.  The group discussed some funding ideas including:

·       Approach businesses on sponsoring our directory, website, events, etc.

·       Consider MREA as a possible means to fund donations to our group through.  Sue will approach this idea with Tehri Parker of MREA.

·       Pursue becoming our own non-profit organization under 501(3)(c) so that folks might be more apt to donate to our cause if they know it can be a tax write-off

·       Possibly allow advertisements on our website as a means to bring money to the group

·       Asking for money for listings in the directory next year.

Sharon will maintain a Sustainable Stockton Funding Ideas List.

Attendance Town Meetings.  Mary Maller, Donna Literski and Sue Anderson were able to attend a Stockton Town Board Meeting to report on our Committee’s activities and ask permission for give away CFL’s at the polling place on Election Day.  The Town Clerk and Town Board all supported our light bulb giveaway.

The Committee plans to periodically attend the Town Meeting to update the Board on our activities.  We will avoid the busy period of November through January as well as the bimonthly meeting in which the treasurer’s report is discussed.

Open Discussion.  Sue mentioned we incorrectly expressed what the acronym WEEB stands for in the last newsletter article.  It should be:  Wisconsin Environmental Education Board.  We need to include a correction of this in our next Town Newsletter article.

Next Meeting – discussion: Eco-friendly holiday ideas.  We will have a shorter meeting on December 4th (at 7 pm, Town of Stockton Municipal Building) in order to leave more time for discussing holiday ideas.  Our January meeting will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009, due to the New Year’s holiday.

Respectfully Submitted,

 Sharon Reichert, Secretary
