Meeting #13 - Oct. 2, 2008

Sustainable Stockton Meeting Minutes

Thursday, October 2, 2008, at 6:30 pm, Stockton Municipal Building (Meeting #13)

Attendees:  Sue Anderson, Kim Becken, Cindy Davis, Jeanne Dodge, Donna Literski, Mary Maller, and Andrea Spears.

Agenda Items:

1.     Meeting Minutes.  Minutes of Meeting #12 were approved as written.

2.     Newsletter Submission.

·        Sue’s proposed article for the October Town newsletter was read, edited and approved.  It will announce the upcoming light bulb/energy information distribution, documentary series and web site activation.

3.  Documentary Series.

·        Mary has finalized the schedule for the upcoming documentary series which is as follows:

November 13 – “The Future of Food”
January 15 – “Escape from Affluenza”

February 12 – “Crude Impact”

March 12 – “Power of Community”

·        The films will be shown at 7:00 p.m. at the MREA building with a discussion to follow for those interested.  Mary is also seeking volunteers to head the group discussions.  If you would like to volunteer, please give Mary call or e-mail her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Mary and Sue will provide popcorn for November’s meeting.  Attendees are to provide their own beverage.

·        We plan to publicize the event in a similar format to that used by ICE (Interfaith Community for the Earth).  Mary is writing up publicity info.  Andrea, Kim and Donna will help with distribution.  A reminder was given to include our Sustainable Stockton e-mail list and MREA folks.  Sue will add the viewing dates to the Central Wisconsin Sustainability group’s web calendar of events.

·         Many thanks Mary for coordinating this project for us.

4.  Good & Services Directory

·        We have good news.  Mary talked with Jerry Piesek and he has offered to make copies of the Goods and Services brochure for our group.  Because of his generous contribution, we may be able to send residents a copy of the brochure in the upcoming January Town newsletter.

·        Mary has also obtained a few more listings for the directory.  We will update the Directory on-line (Donna) and the brochure (Sue/Karen Hurst).

5.     Web Site

·        The web site is to be available to folks on line with the proposed “check off” disclaimer programmed in by November 4th.

6.  WEEB Grant.

·        Kim reported more good news as we will definitely receive a minimum of 500 light bulbs and likely closer to 750 for distribution in Stockton.  At the last presidential election the Town had 1600+ residents vote.  We estimate approximately 800 households.  Thus we will distribute one bulb per household as previously planned.

·        Sue, Mary and Donna attended the September Town meeting to request use of the property to distribute bulbs.  We were given the use of the Town conference room as a distribution site.  Thank you Marie and Town officials.  At the meeting we discussed setup, etc. for the day.

·        Kim brought a copy of the poster and flyer the students prepared for the event.  Kim will have copies of the flyer (purchased with grant monies) available for us.  Also, a large version of the poster for our use.  (Note removal of Cindy’s name on the flyer/poster.)   Cindy had received several informational brochures from Focus on Energy which will be available for the taking.

·        As part of the grant stipulations we need to record who has received the light bulbs.  Additional information may be solicited if time permits. We will work to obtain this info with the least amount of confusion/time involved.  Sue will have clipboards available for sign up.  Donna will print a resident list for checkoff.

·        Sue, Sharon and Kim have volunteered to work the day for this event.  Sue will make the offer to others in the Sustainable Stockton e-mail group to volunteer.

·        Kim will be delivering the bulbs to the Municipal building.

7.  Open Discussion

·        In the packet of materials from Focus on Energy Cindy received an Energy Application Form in which businesses and residents can switch over to CFLs and receive rebates.  The current program is open through December of 2008.  Cindy will contact Focus on Energy to see if the program is extended into next year.  Sue will prepare a short article for the Town newsletter to make residents aware of this savings opportunity.  This may apply to the larger fluorescent bulbs only – Sue will note if so.

·        Mary suggested the Group consider conducting a “brainstorming” session on how to celebrate the upcoming December holiday season in a more eco-friendly manner.  It was agreed to dedicate the major portion of our December 4th meeting to do.

8.  Next Meeting

·        The next meeting will be Thursday, November 6, at 7:00 pm at the Stockton Municipal Building.  Agenda for that meeting will be sent at a later date.

Respectfully Submitted,

Donna Literski
