Eco-MunicipalityWhat is it?A municipality that aspires to develop an ecologically, economically, and socially healthy community for the long-term, using sustainability as a guide, and a democratic, highly participative development process as the method. Eco-municipalities are developed locally to meet local needs. 4 Phases/Guidelines for Developing an Eco-Municipality- Reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
- Reduce dependence on chemicals that can accumulate in nature.
- Reduce dependence on activities that harm life-sustaining eco-systems.
- Meet present and future human needs fairly and efficiently (social justice and economic equality).
Ideas- Local ride-sharing program (800 number?); tie into Stockton elderly/disabled ride provisions.
- Locally produced, shared electricity generation
- “Find it in Stockton”- who can provide what locally? (website, ph #)
- Local community “green” purchases (quantity discount, co-op)
- Importance of what we have now (programs in place) – inventory
- Put right economic incentives to motivate participation
- Extract fuel from landfill? Invite Meleesa Johnson to speak (solid waste)
- Evaluate energy inefficiencies in housing/provide a funding source to allow people to upgrade insulation/windows/install alternative energy sources/CAP Services and/Targeted Home Performance programs
- Directly approach people with ideas of resources available to help them increase efficiency
- Directory of local knowledge/help to increase energy efficiency
- Outreach to individuals
- “Study” groups to discuss/stimulate ideas
- ENACT-neighorhood meetings to brainstorm ideas for sustainability
- Spreading the word- local TV, radio
- How do we draw people in?
- Supporting local agriculture/biofuels/individual farmers
Individuals attending meeting will come up with own inventory lists of what’s out there locally and information of what we should use in a form. Next meeting is Thursday, October 4th, 2007, at 7 pm. Sharon Reichert
