Meeting: Eco-Municipality

Eco-Municipality

What is it?

A municipality that aspires to develop an ecologically, economically, and socially healthy community for the long-term, using sustainability as a guide, and a democratic, highly participative development process as the method.  Eco-municipalities are developed locally to meet local needs.

4 Phases/Guidelines for Developing an Eco-Municipality

  1. Reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  2. Reduce dependence on chemicals that can accumulate in nature.
  3. Reduce dependence on activities that harm life-sustaining eco-systems.
  4. Meet present and future human needs fairly and efficiently (social justice and economic equality).

Ideas

  1. Local ride-sharing program (800 number?); tie into Stockton elderly/disabled ride provisions.
  2. Locally produced, shared electricity generation
  3. “Find it in Stockton”- who can provide what locally? (website, ph #)
  4. Local community “green” purchases (quantity discount, co-op)
  5. Importance of what we have now (programs in place) – inventory
  6. Put right economic incentives to motivate participation
  7. Extract fuel from landfill?  Invite Meleesa Johnson to speak (solid waste)
  8. Evaluate energy inefficiencies in housing/provide a funding source to allow people to upgrade insulation/windows/install alternative energy sources/CAP Services and/Targeted Home Performance programs
  9. Directly approach people with ideas of resources available to help them increase efficiency
  10. Directory of local knowledge/help to increase energy efficiency
  11. Outreach to individuals
  12. “Study” groups to discuss/stimulate ideas
  13. ENACT-neighorhood meetings to brainstorm ideas for sustainability
  14. Spreading the word- local TV, radio
  15. How do we draw people in?
  16. Supporting local agriculture/biofuels/individual farmers

Individuals attending meeting will come up with own inventory lists of what’s out there locally and information of what we should use in a form.

Next meeting is Thursday, October 4th, 2007, at 7 pm.
