This award-winning documentary will be shown on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 7:00 pm at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association at 7558 Deer Road in Custer. This film explores one of the most baffling mysteries of nature: the disappearance of the honeybee. Beginning the winter of 2006, millions of bees vanished from their hives without leaving a trace. The disappearance of the bees left billions of dollars of crops at risk, threatening our food supply. This film follows researchers as they track clues from around the globe to discover why the honeybees are disappearing in record numbers. Free popcorn available. Bring your own beverage. Questions: call 592-4051. Save the date for these future FREE movie showings in our series:o January 14, 2010 Food inc. reveals surprising information about the food we eat and how it is produced. o February 11, 2010 Fresh celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people who are reinventing our food system in a healthier, more environmentally friendly direction.o March 11, 2010 Mad City Chickens is a sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical documentary about raising chickens in your backyard. Sponsored by Sustainable Stockton and MREA. § Kill A Watt Monitor available to borrow. If you are interested in tracking your electric use for specific appliances, you may want to borrow the Kill A Watt Monitor. You just plug in the monitor between the outlet and the appliance and leave it there for a specific length of time (the time varies with each appliance). Using simple calculations you can find out how much energy hat appliance is using per day/week/month/year and how much it is costing you to run that appliance. To borrow the Kill A Watt Monitor, call Sue Anderson at 592-4423. You can also borrow a monitor from the Portage County Public Library in Stevens Point. § Looking for additional sustainable eents in central Wisconsin? Bill is currently helping us update the Sustainable Stockton website. All of you for allowing me to serve as Sustainable Stockton Secretary for the past 2 ½ years. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed my SS post, I am resigning as secretary for personal reasons. My life has become too unpredictable and too unscheduled to give this position the steady attention it deserves. Though I may not be taking notes at meetings anymore, I still plan to remain an active participant in this important, grassroots organization. The quality of people in Sustainable Stockton makes staying involved fun and worthwhile. You won’t find finer folks anywhere--or better goals to work for. If anyone out there is a detail-oriented person with good communication skills and a little extra time, please consider volunteering to become our next Sustainable Stockton Secretary. For more information about the position, contact Sue Anderson at 592-4423. Sharon Reichert, Sustainable Stockton Secretary
